The miracles
Lanciano is worldly known for two miracles. The first, more famous, is saved in the church of San Francesco.
The story tells that in the 1700 a monk doubted that the Christ was present in the Eucharist while celebrating Mass. The host, at that point, transformed into flesh and the wine into five globules of blood. Several examinations in the following centuries testified that the flesh is of human heart. The second miracle is known as the one of Ricciarella, a woman in Lanciano who placed on fire the consecrated host to make an erotic potion to seduce her husband. In this case too, the host transformed into blood. Ricciarella tried to hide it into the stable, but horses refused to enter and kneed on the forelegs. Ricciarella ended up bringing back the host to the priest of the Sant’Agostino Church. |
