Lanciano, Anxanum, was founded by Solimo, former mate of Enea, was inhabited by the Osci, Etruscans and Gauls, was conquered by the Romans in 435 B.C. . Trade had a remarkable development during the byzantine domination. French domination follows. In 1300 king Charles II gave the town the right to elect a Mastrogiurato, i.e. the person with civil and penal power during fairs. After interior fights and conquests, Lanciano got back to prosperity in 1500, however in 1600 will be deeply signed by the pest. At the end of 1700 the town was divided between the ideals of the intellectual class, sustaining the 1799 republic, and the lower class in favour of the Bourbons. In 1869, with the Garibaldi’s conquest of Naples, Lanciano was among the earliest towns to declare the end of the Bourbons monarchy.
