Lanciano is also known for its feasts, which have become regular appointment for many tourists.
As an example, the feast of Sant’Egidio, a benedictine abbè protector of disabled and leprous, who lived in the beginning of the eighteen century.
The Saint is celebrated the 1st of September but the fair takes place in the evening of August 31st and has
become the children fair with a growing number of toy sellers. The heart of the fair is in Plebiscito square,
where traditional handmade small bells are sold as a love promise for fiancées. Two weeks later, the opening of the September feast, or Settembre Lancianese, three days full of initiatives starting in the middle of the night with marvellous fireworks. During three days takes place a contest among the most beautiful and original fireworks.
Also during the month of August, the Mastrogiurato day, with the parade in mediaeval costumes, flag-jugglers,
and games among the teams representing the Lanciano districts, to celebrate the political and juridical personality established by the Angevins in 1300 with the charge of organizing the Anxanum fairs and the security
of travellers and trade.
